International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation 2023
In continuation of our activities to commemorate International day of zero tolerance for #FGM.
Today, 8th February 2023, our team sensitized over 60 boys at St. Augustine Comprehensive High School Oye-Ekiti and gave an overview of FGM.
Through questioning, we discovered 98% of the boys heard about FGM for the first time during the sensitization. They were astonished to hear such an act can be performed on women and girls.
The boys listened attentively while the sensitization was ongoing, and they asked a few questions to gain more clarity on the types of FGM.
They felt sober and empathetic when the procedures for performing FGM were explained.
They pledged their commitment not to engage in the harmful practice and they will keep educating others about the practice.
We shared the @_nigawd FGM handbook, to aid their understanding and conversation on #FGM when passing down the message. We encouraged them to probe further from their parents and guidance to gain insight into reasons why FGM is being performed.
Partnering with men and boys to end female genital mutilation will go a long way in eradicating FGM.
