In Commemoration of World Day Against Child Labour 2024 themed “Let’s Act on Our Commitment: End Child Labour” as a member of AONN Ekiti State , our team conducted a comprehensive sensitization program at Emmanuel N/P School. The program aimed to educate over 176 students and 12 female teachers about the critical issues of child labour and sexual child abuse.

The goal of the program was to empower the students, teachers, and staff with the knowledge and resources to stay safe from perpetrators of abuse. The event was spearheaded by a representative from the Living World Mission (LIWOM), who sensitized the audience on the concept of child labour, its various forms, consequences, relevant laws and policies, and the path forward to address this pressing issue.

In addition, our Executive Director , Dowole Gold Moyinoluwa facilitated a session on sexual abuse and the reporting channels available to the school and community as whole. She provided a clear definition of rape as per the Ekiti State Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Law, and encouraged the participants to identify their private body parts. Crucially, she stressed the importance of reporting any inappropriate touching or behavior to trusted adults in their lives.

The sensitization event was well-attended, and the participants actively engaged in the discussions and demonstrations. The pupils asked thought-provoking questions, such as “If a boy plays with another boy’s private part, what should I do?” and “If my daddy touches my private parts while bathing me, what should I do?” The team provided comprehensive and age-appropriate responses to these inquiries.

The school administrators expressed deep gratitude for the network’s efforts to prioritize the overall wellbeing of the school community. This event serves as a testament to our commitment to ending all forms of child labour and ensuring the protection and empowerment of children.

Let us continue to come together, as a unified force, to eradicate every form of child labour and create a safer, more just world for our children. #endchildlabour #endchildabuse
