Earlier today, as members of the Ekiti State Chapter of the Child Protection Network (CPN) Cpn Ekiti, we visited All Saints Nursery/Primary School and The Anointed Nursery/Primary School in Opopogboro, Ado-Ekiti. Our goal was to raise awareness about the important issues of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and child abuse.

During the sensitization session, we provided information to over 107 pupils and 21 teachers about FGM. We discussed the different types of FGM, the existing laws against FGM, the harmful effects of FGM, and the reporting pathways for child abuse and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Our executive director Dowole Gold Moyinoluwa, who spoke in both Yoruba and English languages, explained the difference between male circumcision and female genital mutilation. She highlighted the prevalence of FGM in Ekiti and emphasized the negative impact it has on female children and their future. She also clarified the concept of private parts and encouraged the children to speak out and report any instances of someone touching their private parts.

After the sensitization session, the pupils had an opportunity to ask questions about female genital mutilation. Some of the questions they raised included how to identify if someone had undergone mutilation and the advantages and disadvantages of undergoing or not undergoing FGM.

To conclude the session, Abimbola Grip Ngo led an educative song titled “I will tell my teacher if you touch my private part.” The pupils sang along as they walked back to their respective classes.

The headmistresses of both schools expressed their appreciation for our visit and expressed their desire to have us continue engaging with their students in the future.

Early sensitization plays a crucial role in shaping the next generation. By providing children with the necessary knowledge, skills, and values, we empower them to become active contributors to a more inclusive, compassionate, and equitable society.
